Breastfeeding Guide for New Mothers: Latch, Supply & Common Problems

3 June 2026ยท7 min read

Breastfeeding is one of the most important things you can do for your baby's health, but it can also be one of the most challenging. The good news: almost all breastfeeding problems can be solved with the right knowledge and support.

**The Correct Latch, This is Everything**

A bad latch is the root cause of 90% of breastfeeding problems: pain, cracked nipples, low supply, and frustrated babies. Here's how to get it right:

1. Baby's mouth should be wide open, like a yawn 2. Baby should take the areola (dark area around nipple), not just the nipple 3. Baby's nose should be free (not pressed against your breast) 4. You should feel pulling, not pain

Signs of a good latch: - No nipple pain after the first few seconds - You can hear the baby swallow - Baby's cheeks are rounded (not sucked in) - Baby comes off the breast relaxed and satisfied

**Boosting Milk Supply**

Milk supply works on supply and demand, the more your baby feeds, the more milk you produce.

Foods that boost milk supply (galactagogues): - Methi (fenugreek) seeds, soak overnight and eat, or make methi tea - Shatavari, traditional Ayurvedic herb, available as powder or tablets - Oatmeal (daliya), excellent for supply - Fennel seeds (saunf), add to water or tea - Sajja (pearl millet) / ragi, make rotis or porridge

**Common Problems and Solutions**

*Cracked nipples:* Apply lanolin cream after each feed. Let nipples air dry. Continue feeding, stopping makes it worse.

*Engorgement:* Feed frequently. Cold cabbage leaves provide relief. Warm compress before feeding.

*Mastitis (breast infection):* Red, hot, hard breast with fever. See a doctor immediately, antibiotics needed. Keep feeding, it clears the infection faster.

*Low supply:* Feed more often (at least every 2-3 hours). Ensure proper latch. Stay hydrated, minimum 3 liters/day.
